Field Trip – CPS Students visit NEVLEC’s Power Plant

On Thursday 17th October, 2024, NEVLEC had the pleasure of hosting the Grade 4 classes from the Charlestown Primary School (CPS). As part of their Science curriculum on the topic “Energy”, a total of twenty-six (26) eager students, accompanied by their two dedicated teachers, visited our Power Plant to gain a deeper understanding of how energy works in real-life applications.

Our Generation team welcomed the students with an engaging presentation covering various forms of energy, including chemical energy, mechanical energy, heat energy, sound energy, and electrical energy. The children were enthusiastic and attentive as we explained how energy is generated, converted, and distributed to power homes, schools, and businesses across the community.

The students learned about chemical energy and how it is stored in fuels and transformed into mechanical energy by our operations staff. We also demonstrated how this mechanical energy is further converted into electrical energy, a concept that captivated their curiosity. Their questions revealed a genuine interest in understanding the complex processes involved in energy production. Sound energy was another fascinating subject for the students, as they learned about the noises produced by our turbochargers and Engine. Equipped with earplugs, they were given the opportunity to walk through the engine room, which deepened their understanding of how sound plays a role in energy production.

One highlight of the tour was when the students explored the topic of “Heat Energy”. We demonstrated how fuel combustion produces heat, which then drives our turbochargers. The children were so intrigued by this information, that it sparked an interest to touch a warm engine. This was NOT permitted. SAFETY is always our top priority.

Throughout the visit, the students were active participants; asking insightful questions and taking notes. We were impressed by their level of engagement and the thoughtful inquiries they made, such as how we ensure a continuous supply of energy to their homes.

It was a pleasure to witness the enthusiasm and curiosity of the young Science students as they explored the world of energy. This field trip was a memorable experience for the students. The management and staff of NEVLEC are proud to have contributed to their learning journey. We look forward to inspiring more students to discover the importance of energy in our daily lives.
